Verifying Your Website From All Angles

Hi There! Today I will be covering a very important point which I have learnt today from my own personal experience – Verifying Your Website From All Angles and How a WordPress Theme can affect your Website From All Angles.

Initially I had hosted my site in another shared hosting platform. I had purchased a new WordPress theme and installed the same on my website. I was very happy to see the website up and running. I would have continued with that forever and suffered serious consequences if it was not for Wealthy Affiliate. I will explain here as to how Wealthy Affiliate saved my website and ensured that my online business was not compromised!

After becoming a premium member at Wealthy Affiliate, I moved my website from the shared hosting platform to the Wealthy Affiliate’s SiteRubix Platform since I became eligible to host up to 10 WordPress websites in WealthyAffiliate as part of my Premium membership.

After moving my site to Wealthy Affiliate SiteRubix hosting, I got access to a host of tools and other insights which led me to diagnose the health of my website. This was never possible in my previous shared hosting since the tools provided there was very basic. This was one of the main reasons that compelled me to move my site to WealthyAffiliate SiteRubix platform. But the move was 100% a move in the right direction.

I am going to focus on one specific point in this article which is extremely important and I will let you know on how I reached this point.

1. PageSpeed Insights In Wealthy Affiliate SiteRubix Platform:

this is a sample screenshot from WealthyAffiliate’s SiteRubix Hosting Platform showing a website’s stats.

PageSpeed Insights is from Google and they are great to analyze the performance of your website and its pages/posts.

PageSpeed Insights (PSI) reports on the performance of a page on both mobile and desktop devices, and provides suggestions on how that page may be improved.

PSI provides both lab and field data about a page. Lab data is useful for debugging performance issues, as it is collected in a controlled environment. However, it may not capture real-world bottlenecks. Field data is useful for capturing true, real-world user experience – but has a more limited set of metrics.

As part of the Wealthy Affiliate SiteRubix platform, we have a built-in section for checking the performance of every page and post in your website with the google pagespeed insights. So I had checked the performance of my website and found that it was not up to mark! When I kept digging more and more into this I figured out that my theme was slow in terms of performance! So I was experimenting various things from the theme and managed to improve the performance of the desktop version from the 30s range to the 80s and 90s range!

I had checked the performance of my website and found that it was not up to mark!

Still I was not happy with the mobile version of my website which was only getting a performance score of 70. So I was still working on my website to improve it.

The mobile version of my website was only getting a performance score of 70.

This led me to the next step which made me discover something so drastic that blew my mind!

2. UptimeRobot – Monitor The Uptime Of Your Website:

This is one the world’s leading website uptime monitoring service. You do get a free membership which gives you up to 50 monitors that you can setup. the advantages of using this service are:

  • Know the downtime of your website before anyone else does.
  • SSL expiry warning notification

Okay, now back to my story of what happened. When I had setup the uptimerobot monitoring for my website, i noticed that my website was going up and down as per the alerts. However my website was always up and available. The availability was confirmed by WealthyAffiliate SiteSupport. So what was going wrong?

It was crazy and even SiteSupport could not solve this mystery! This was when I got interested and started to investigate the matter on my own.

I made a duplicate of my website in WealthyAffiliate SiteRubix itself since I get to host up to 10 websites for free, I have an advantage! When I did this, I tried various things and finally I just decided to change the website’s theme. That’s it! Suddenly the website’s downtime issues disappeared! There were no more downtimes reported.

Actually the downtime that was reported by uptimerobot monitoring for my site was 403 error:

When I had changed the theme to the default GeneratePress that is recommended by WealthyAffiliate, the downtime and 403 forbidden errors disappeared! That was when I learnt that themes play such an important role and so its very critical to have the right and clean theme. If I had stuck with the old theme, then the very uptime of my website would have suffered and who knows, this might also have been an issue to the Search Engine Optimization!

Look at the stats after I had changed the theme below:

The point that I am trying to make here is that even the Themes that you choose for your wordpress site is SO SO SO important. But here’s the thing. What led me to find this? Wealthy Affiliate.

The training and the tools which are blended into the Wealthy Affiliate platform is so intuitive that it led me to this discovery and made me take the right choice. Anyways, I changed my website’s theme now and I had used the tools to do the research.

So that concludes our article for now as I have conveyed a very important lesson to my readers and I hope it helps someone, someday!
